Plant Biology Research Seminar : Nutrient Utilization Efficiency: What we can learn from the theoretical models |

The human food security rests in the improvement of food distribution as well as in the increase of crops production through development of sustainable agricultural activity. In this context, enabling efficient use of essential mineral elements originally present in the soils as well as those added as fertilizers is considered a research priority. To fulfil these goal two strategies had been devised: improving the efficiency of nutrient acquisition by roots from the soil solution and improving the efficiency which the acquired elements are utilized to produce biomass or edible parts of the plants. While important advances have been made in our understanding and the genetic manipulation of the efficient of nutrient acquisition, the progress in the understanding about nutrient utilization efficiency (NUE) has been comparatively slow. This phenomenon is due particularly to conceptual and experimental problems involved in measuring such efficiency. Potassium (K+) is an important macronutrient that contributes to growth and development of plants and soils of large portions of agricultural land areas are deficient in this nutrient so that this element is included in many fertilizer formulations. The use of theoretical models allowed knowing the dynamic of actual NUE (NUEa) of K+. From this approach important information was obtained regards the capacity of some NUE indicators to reflect the NUEa, as well as which are the variables that affect it. Finally, from these results a methodological approach is proposed that could be used in breeding programs.
